    حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ إِدْرِيسَ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ، وَيَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ، وَعُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ، وَابْنِ، عَجْلاَنَ عَنْ عُبَادَةَ بْنِ الْوَلِيدِ بْنِ عُبَادَةَ بْنِ الصَّامِتِ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ عُبَادَةَ بْنِ الصَّامِتِ، قَالَ بَايَعْنَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم عَلَى السَّمْعِ وَالطَّاعَةِ فِي الْعُسْرِ وَالْيُسْرِ وَالْمَنْشَطِ وَالْمَكْرَهِ وَالأَثَرَةِ عَلَيْنَا وَأَنْ لاَ نُنَازِعَ الأَمْرَ أَهْلَهُ وَأَنْ نَقُولَ الْحَقَّ حَيْثُمَا كُنَّا لاَ نَخَافُ فِي اللَّهِ لَوْمَةَ لاَئِمٍ ‏.‏

    It was
    narrated that ‘Ubadah bin Samit said: “We gave our pledge to
    the
    Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), pledging to listen and obey in times of
    hardship and times of ease, willingly or reluctantly, and when others
    are shown preference over us, and that we would not dispute the order
    of those in charge, that we would speak the truth wherever we are,
    and
    that we would not fear the blame of anyone when acting or
    speaking for
    the sake of Allah.”

    Chapter: Going out for Hajj

    حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ عَمَّارٍ، وَأَبُو مُصْعَبٍ الزُّهْرِيُّ وَسُوَيْدُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ قَالُوا حَدَّثَنَا مَالِكُ بْنُ أَنَسٍ، عَنْ سُمَىٍّ، مَوْلَى أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ السَّمَّانِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏ “‏ السَّفَرُ قِطْعَةٌ مِنَ الْعَذَابِ يَمْنَعُ أَحَدَكُمْ نَوْمَهُ وَطَعَامَهُ وَشَرَابَهُ فَإِذَا قَضَى أَحَدُكُمْ نَهْمَتَهُ مِنْ سَفَرِهِ فَلْيُعَجِّلِ الرُّجُوعَ إِلَى أَهْلِهِ ‏” ‏ ‏.‏ حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ كَاسِبٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، عَنْ سُهَيْلٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم بِنَحْوِهِ ‏.‏

    It was
    narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)
    said: “Traveling is a kind of torment, it keeps anyone of you from his
    sleep, food and drink. When anyone of you has fulfilled the purpose
    for which he travled, let him hasten to return to his family.” Another chain reports a similar hadith.

    حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ عَمَّارٍ، حَدَّثَنَا الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ، حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ التَّنُوخِيُّ، عَنْ رَبِيعَةَ بْنِ يَزِيدَ، عَنْ أَبِي إِدْرِيسَ الْخَوْلاَنِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي مُسْلِمٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي الْحَبِيبُ الأَمِينُ، – أَمَّا هُوَ إِلَىَّ فَحَبِيبٌ وَأَمَّا هُوَ عِنْدِي فَأَمِينٌ – عَوْفُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ الأَشْجَعِيُّ قَالَ كُنَّا عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم سَبْعَةً أَوْ ثَمَانِيَةً أَوْ تِسْعَةً فَقَالَ ‏”‏ أَلاَ تُبَايِعُونَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ‏”‏ ‏.‏ فَبَسَطْنَا أَيْدِيَنَا فَقَالَ قَائِلٌ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّا قَدْ بَايَعْنَاكَ فَعَلاَمَ نُبَايِعُكَ فَقَالَ ‏”‏ أَنْ تَعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ وَلاَ تُشْرِكُوا بِهِ شَيْئًا وَتُقِيمُوا الصَّلَوَاتِ الْخَمْسَ وَتَسْمَعُوا وَتُطِيعُوا – وَأَسَرَّ كَلِمَةً خُفْيَةً – وَلاَ تَسْأَلُوا النَّاسَ شَيْئًا ‏”‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ فَلَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ بَعْضَ أُولَئِكَ النَّفَرِ يَسْقُطُ سَوْطُهُ فَلاَ يَسْأَلُ أَحَدًا يُنَاوِلُهُ إِيَّاهُ ‏.‏

    ‘Awf
    bin Malik Al-Ashja’i said: “We were with the Prophet (ﷺ) –
    seven or eight or nine of us – and he said: ‘Will you not give
    pledge
    to the Messenger of Allah?’ So we stretched forth our hands
    and
    someone said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, we have already given you
    our
    pledge. On what basis shall we give this pledge?’ He said: ‘(On
    the
    basis that) you will worship Allah and not associate anything
    with
    Him, you will establish the five daily prayers, you will listen
    and
    obey’ – then he spoke some words under his breath – ‘and
    you will not
    ask the people for anything.’ He said: ‘I saw some
    of that group. If
    he dropped his whip he would not ask anyone to pick
    it up for him.’”

    حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، وَعَمْرُو بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ أَبُو إِسْرَائِيلَ، عَنْ فُضَيْلِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، عَنِ الْفَضْلِ، – أَوْ أَحَدِهِمَا عَنِ الآخَرِ، – قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ “‏ مَنْ أَرَادَ الْحَجَّ فَلْيَتَعَجَّلْ فَإِنَّهُ قَدْ يَمْرَضُ الْمَرِيضُ وَتَضِلُّ الضَّالَّةُ وَتَعْرِضُ الْحَاجَةُ ‏” ‏ ‏.‏

    It was
    narrated from Ibn ‘Abbas that Fadl said – or vice verse: “The
    Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘Whoever intends to perform Hajj,
    let
    him hasten to do so, for he may fall sick, lose his mount, or be
    faced
    with some need.’”

    حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ عَتَّابٍ، – مَوْلَى هُرْمُزَ – قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَنَسَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ، يَقُولُ بَايَعْنَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم عَلَى السَّمْعِ وَالطَّاعَةِ فَقَالَ ‏ “‏ فِيمَا اسْتَطَعْتُمْ ‏” ‏ ‏.‏

    It was
    narrated that ‘Attab, the freed slave of Hurmuz, said: “I
    heard
    Anas bin Malik say: ‘We gave our pledge to the Messenger of
    Allah
    (ﷺ) on the basis that we would listen and obey. He (ﷺ) said:
    “As
    much as you can.”

    حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ نُمَيْرٍ، وَعَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا مَنْصُورُ بْنُ وَرْدَانَ، حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الأَعْلَى، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ أَبِي الْبَخْتَرِيِّ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ، قَالَ لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ ‏ {‏وَلِلَّهِ عَلَى النَّاسِ حِجُّ الْبَيْتِ مَنِ اسْتَطَاعَ إِلَيْهِ سَبِيلاً‏} ‏‏.‏ قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ الْحَجُّ فِي كُلِّ عَامٍ فَسَكَتَ ثُمَّ قَالُوا أَفِي كُلِّ عَامٍ فَقَالَ ‏”‏ لاَ وَلَوْ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ لَوَجَبَتْ ‏”‏ ‏.‏ فَنَزَلَتْ ‏ {‏يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لاَ تَسْأَلُوا عَنْ أَشْيَاءَ إِنْ تُبْدَ لَكُمْ تَسُؤْكُمْ ‏} ‏‏.‏

    It was
    narrated that ‘Ali said: “When the following was revealed:
    “And
    Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah) to the House (Ka’bah) is a duty that
    mankind owes to Allah, for whoever can bear the way.” [3:97] They
    asked: ‘O Messenger of Allah, is Hajj every year?’ He remained
    silent.
    They asked: ‘Is it every year?’ He said: ‘No. If I had
    said yes, it
    would have become obligatory.’ Then the following was
    revealed: “O you
    who believe! Ask not about things which, if made
    plain to you, may
    cause you trouble.’” [5:101]

    حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ رُمْحٍ، أَنْبَأَنَا اللَّيْثُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ، عَنْ أَبِي الزُّبَيْرِ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ، قَالَ جَاءَ عَبْدٌ فَبَايَعَ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم عَلَى الْهِجْرَةِ وَلَمْ يَشْعُرِ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم أَنَّهُ عَبْدٌ فَجَاءَ سَيِّدُهُ يُرِيدُهُ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ “‏ بِعْنِيهِ ‏” ‏ ‏.‏ فَاشْتَرَاهُ بِعَبْدَيْنِ أَسْوَدَيْنِ ثُمَّ لَمْ يُبَايِعْ أَحَدًا بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ حَتَّى يَسْأَلَهُ أَعَبْدٌ هُوَ

    It was
    narrated that Jabir said: “A slave came and gave his pledge to
    the
    Prophet (ﷺ), pledging to emigrate, and the Prophet (ﷺ) did not
    realize that he was a slave. Then his master came looking for him,
    and
    the Prophet (ﷺ) said: ‘Sell him to me,’ and he brought him
    in
    exchange for two black slaves. Then after that he did not accept
    the
    pledge from anyone until he had asked whether he was a slave.”

    حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، وَعَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، وَأَحْمَدُ بْنُ سِنَانٍ، قَالُوا حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ “‏ ثَلاَثَةٌ لاَ يُكَلِّمُهُمُ اللَّهُ وَلاَ يَنْظُرُ إِلَيْهِمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ وَلاَ يُزَكِّيهِمْ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ رَجُلٌ عَلَى فَضْلِ مَاءٍ بِالْفَلاَةِ يَمْنَعُهُ مِنِ ابْنِ السَّبِيلِ وَرَجُلٌ بَايَعَ رَجُلاً بِسِلْعَةٍ بَعْدَ الْعَصْرِ فَحَلَفَ بِاللَّهِ لأَخَذَهَا بِكَذَا وَكَذَا فَصَدَّقَهُ وَهُوَ عَلَى غَيْرِ ذَلِكَ وَرَجُلٌ بَايَعَ إِمَامًا لاَ يُبَايِعُهُ إِلاَّ لِدُنْيَا فَإِنْ أَعْطَاهُ مِنْهَا وَفَى لَهُ وَإِنْ لَمْ يُعْطِهِ مِنْهَا لَمْ يَفِ لَهُ ‏” ‏ ‏.‏

    It was
    narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)
    said: “There are three to whom Allah will not speak on the Day of
    Resurrection, not will He look at them nor purify them, and theirs
    will be a painful torment: A man who has surplus water in the desert
    and withholds it from a wayfarer; a man who sells a man his product
    after ‘Asr, swearing by Allah that he bought it for such and such a
    price, and the other believes him, but that is not the case; and a
    man
    who gives his pledge to a ruler, only doing to for the purpose of
    worldly gain, and if he is given something he fulfills it, but if he
    is not given anything he does not fulfill it.”

    حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ إِدْرِيسَ، عَنْ حَسَنِ بْنِ فُرَاتٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ أَبِي حَازِمٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏”‏ إِنَّ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ كَانَتْ تَسُوسُهُمْ أَنْبِيَاؤُهُمْ كُلَّمَا ذَهَبَ نَبِيٌّ خَلَفَهُ نَبِيٌّ وَأَنَّهُ لَيْسَ كَائِنٌ بَعْدِي نَبِيٌّ فِيكُمْ ‏”‏ ‏.‏ قَالُوا فَمَا يَكُونُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ ‏”‏ تَكُونُ خُلَفَاءُ فَيَكْثُرُوا ‏”‏ ‏.‏ قَالُوا فَكَيْفَ نَصْنَعُ قَالَ ‏”‏ أَوْفُوا بِبَيْعَةِ الأَوَّلِ فَالأَوَّلِ أَدُّوا الَّذِي عَلَيْكُمْ فَسَيَسْأَلُهُمُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ عَنِ الَّذِي عَلَيْهِمْ ‏”‏ ‏.‏

    It was
    narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)
    said: “The affairs of the Children of Israel were administered by
    their
    Prophets. Every time a Prophet left, he was followed by another,
    but
    there will be no Prophet among you after I am gone.” They said:
    “What will happen, O Messenger of Allah?” He said: “There will
    be
    caliphs and there will be many of them.” They said: “What
    should we
    do?” He said: “Fulfill your pledge to the first one,
    then the one who
    comes after him, and do the duties required of you,
    for Allah will
    question them about the duties upon them.”

    Chapter: The virtue of Jihad in the cause of Allah

    حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحِيمِ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، عَنْ هِشَامٍ، عَنْ حَفْصَةَ بِنْتِ سِيرِينَ، عَنْ أُمِّ عَطِيَّةَ الأَنْصَارِيَّةِ، قَالَتْ غَزَوْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم سَبْعَ غَزَوَاتٍ أَخْلُفُهُمْ فِي رِحَالِهِمْ وَأَصْنَعُ لَهُمُ الطَّعَامَ وَأُدَاوِي الْجَرْحَى وَأَقُومُ عَلَى الْمَرْضَى ‏.‏

    It was
    narrated that Umm ‘Atiyyah Al-Ansariyyah said: “I fought
    alongside the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) in seven campaigns, looking
    after their goods, making food for them, tending the wounded and
    looking after the sick.”
