    Chapter: What was narrated concerning the virtue of marriage

    حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبَادَةَ الْوَاسِطِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ بْنُ حُسَيْنٍ أَبُو مَالِكٍ النَّخَعِيُّ، عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ، عَنْ أَبِي حَازِمٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ ‏ “‏ الْوَلِيمَةُ أَوَّلَ يَوْمٍ حَقٌّ وَالثَّانِي مَعْرُوفٌ وَالثَّالِثُ رِيَاءٌ وَسُمْعَةٌ ‏” ‏ ‏.‏

    It was narrated from Abu Hurairah: that the Messenger of Allah said: ‘The wedding feast on the first day is an obligation, on the second day is a custom and on the third day is showing off.”

    حَدَّثَنَا هَنَّادُ بْنُ السَّرِيِّ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدَةُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ، عَنْ أَبِي قِلاَبَةَ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ ‏ “‏ إِنَّ لِلثَّيِّبِ ثَلاَثًا وَلِلْبِكْرِ سَبْعًا ‏” ‏ ‏.‏

    It was narrated from Anas: that the Messenger of Allah said: “Three days for a previously-married woman and seven days for a virgin.”

    حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ الْقَطَّانُ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ، – يَعْنِي ابْنَ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ هِشَامٍ – عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ لَمَّا تَزَوَّجَ أُمَّ سَلَمَةَ أَقَامَ عِنْدَهَا ثَلاَثًا وَقَالَ ‏ “‏ لَيْسَ بِكِ عَلَى أَهْلِكِ هَوَانٌ إِنْ شِئْتِ سَبَّعْتُ لَكِ وَإِنْ سَبَّعْتُ لَكِ سَبَّعْتُ لِنِسَائِي ‏” ‏ ‏.‏

    It was narrated from Al-Harith from his father that when when the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) married Umm Salamah, he stayed with her for three days, then he said: “You are not insignificant in your husband’s eyes. If you wish, I will stay with you for seven days, but then I will stay with my other wives for seven days too.”

    حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى، وَصَالِحُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يَحْيَى الْقَطَّانُ، قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُوسَى، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَجْلاَنَ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ شُعَيْبٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ جَدِّهِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ قَالَ ‏ “‏ إِذَا أَفَادَ أَحَدُكُمُ امْرَأَةً أَوْ خَادِمًا أَوْ دَابَّةً فَلْيَأْخُذْ بِنَاصِيَتِهَا وَلْيَقُلِ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ خَيْرِهَا وَخَيْرِ مَا جُبِلَتْ عَلَيْهِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّهَا وَشَرِّ مَا جُبِلَتْ عَلَيْهِ ‏” ‏ ‏.‏

    It was narrated from ‘Abdullah bin ‘Amr: that the Prophet said: “When anyone of you gets a new wife, a servant, or an animal, let him take hold of the forelock and say: Allahumma inni as`aluka min khayriha wa khayri ma jubilat ‘alaihi, wa ‘audhu bika min sharriha wa sharri ma jubilat `alaih (O Allah, I ask You for the goodness within her and the goodness that she is inclined towards, and I seek refuge with you from the evil to which she is inclined).’ ”

    حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ رَافِعٍ، حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ، عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ، عَنْ سَالِمِ بْنِ أَبِي الْجَعْدِ، عَنْ كُرَيْبٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ قَالَ ‏ “‏ لَوْ أَنَّ أَحَدَكُمْ إِذَا أَتَى امْرَأَتَهُ قَالَ اللَّهُمَّ جَنِّبْنِي الشَّيْطَانَ وَجَنِّبِ الشَّيْطَانَ مَا رَزَقْتَنِي ثُمَّ كَانَ بَيْنَهُمَا وَلَدٌ لَمْ يُسَلِّطِ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ الشَّيْطَانَ – أَوْ لَمْ يَضُرَّهُ – ‏” ‏ ‏.‏

    It was narrated from Ibn `Abbas: that the Prophet said: “When anyone of you has intercourse with his wife, let him say: Allahumma jannibnish-Shaitana wa jannibish-Shaitana ma razaqtani (O Allah, keep Satan away from me and keep Satan away from that with which You bless me).’ Then if they have a child, Allah will never allow Satan to gain control over him or he will never harm him.”

    حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ، وَأَبُو أُسَامَةَ قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا بَهْزُ بْنُ حَكِيمٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ جَدِّهِ، قَالَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ عَوْرَاتُنَا مَا نَأْتِي مِنْهَا وَمَا نَذَرُ قَالَ ‏”‏ احْفَظْ عَوْرَتَكَ إِلاَّ مِنْ زَوْجَتِكَ أَوْ مَا مَلَكَتْ يَمِينُكَ ‏”‏ ‏.‏ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ كَانَ الْقَوْمُ بَعْضُهُمْ فِي بَعْضٍ قَالَ ‏”‏ إِنِ اسْتَطَعْتَ أَنْ لاَ تُرِيَهَا أَحَدًا فَلاَ تُرِيَنَّهَا ‏”‏ ‏.‏ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَإِنْ كَانَ أَحَدُنَا خَالِيًا قَالَ ‏”‏ فَاللَّهُ أَحَقُّ أَنْ يُسْتَحْيَى مِنْهُ مِنَ النَّاسِ ‏”‏ ‏.‏

    Bahz bin Hakim narrated from his father that his grandfather said: “I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, with regard to our ‘Awrah, what may we uncover of it and what must we conceal?’ He said: ‘Cover your ‘Awrah, except from your wife and those whom your right hand possesses.’ I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, what if the people live close together?’ He said: ‘If you can make sure that no one sees it, then do not let anyone see it.’ I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, what if one of us is alone?’ He said: ‘Allah is more deserving that you should feel shy before Him than People.’ ”

    حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ وَهْبٍ الْوَاسِطِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ الْقَاسِمِ الْهَمْدَانِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا الأَحْوَصُ بْنُ حَكِيمٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، وَرَاشِدِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، وَعَبْدِ الأَعْلَى بْنِ عَدِيٍّ، عَنْ عُتْبَةَ بْنِ عَبْدٍ السُّلَمِيِّ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ ‏ “‏ إِذَا أَتَى أَحَدُكُمْ أَهْلَهُ فَلْيَسْتَتِرْ وَلاَ يَتَجَرَّدْ تَجَرُّدَ الْعَيْرَيْنِ ‏” ‏ ‏.‏

    It was narrated from ‘Utbah bin ‘Abd Sulamain: that the Messenger of Allah said: “When anyone of you has intercourse with his wife, let him cover himself and not be naked liked donkeys.”

    حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ، عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ، عَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ، عَنْ مَوْلًى، لِعَائِشَةَ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، قَالَتْ مَا نَظَرْتُ – أَوْ مَا رَأَيْتُ – فَرْجَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ قَطُّ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ قَالَ أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ عَنْ مَوْلاَةٍ لِعَائِشَةَ ‏.‏

    It was narrated from a freed slave of ‘Aishah that ‘Aishah said: “I never looked at or I never saw the private part of the Messenger of Allah.’ ”

    حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا ثَابِتٌ الْبُنَانِيُّ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ رَأَى عَلَى عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ أَثَرَ صُفْرَةٍ فَقَالَ ‏”‏ مَا هَذَا أَوْ مَهْ ‏”‏ ‏.‏ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنِّي تَزَوَّجْتُ امْرَأَةً عَلَى وَزْنِ نَوَاةٍ مِنْ ذَهَبٍ ‏.‏ فَقَالَ ‏”‏ بَارَكَ اللَّهُ لَكَ أَوْلِمْ وَلَوْ بِشَاةٍ ‏”‏ ‏.‏

    It was narrated from Anas bin Malik: the Prophet saw traces of yellow perfume on ‘Abdur-Rahmaan bin ‘Awf, and he asked him “What is this?” He said: “O Messenger of Allah, I married a women for the weight of a Nawah (Stone) of gold. He said: “May Allah bless you. Give a feast even if it is only with one sheep.”

    حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ أَبِي الشَّوَارِبِ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ الْمُخْتَارِ، عَنْ سُهَيْلِ بْنِ أَبِي صَالِحٍ، عَنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ مُخَلَّدٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ قَالَ ‏ “‏ لاَ يَنْظُرُ اللَّهُ إِلَى رَجُلٍ جَامَعَ امْرَأَتَهُ فِي دُبُرِهَا ‏” ‏ ‏.‏

    It was narrated from Abu Hurairah: that the Prophet said: “Allah will not look at a man who has intercourse with his wife in her buttocks.”
