    Chapter: What was narrated concerning the virtues of fasting

    حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، وَعَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، وَسَهْلٌ، قَالُوا حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ، عَنْ حَبِيبِ بْنِ زَيْدٍ الأَنْصَارِيِّ، عَنِ امْرَأَةٍ، يُقَالُ لَهَا لَيْلَى عَنْ أُمِّ عُمَارَةَ، قَالَتْ أَتَانَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ فَقَرَّبْنَا إِلَيْهِ طَعَامًا فَكَانَ بَعْضُ مَنْ عِنْدَهُ صَائِمًا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ ‏ “‏ الصَّائِمُ إِذَا أُكِلَ عِنْدَهُ الطَّعَامُ صَلَّتْ عَلَيْهِ الْمَلاَئِكَةُ ‏” ‏ ‏.‏

    It was
    narrated that Umm ‘Umarah said: “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)
    came to us and we brought food for him. Some of those who were with
    him were fasting, and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘If food
    is
    eaten in the presence of one who is fasting, the angels send
    blessing
    upon him.’”

    حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ كَاسِبٍ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَعْنٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، وَعَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الأُمَوِيِّ، عَنْ مَعْنِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ، عَنْ حَنْظَلَةَ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ الأَسْلَمِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ أَنَّهُ قَالَ ‏ “‏ الطَّاعِمُ الشَّاكِرُ بِمَنْزِلَةِ الصَّائِمِ الصَّابِرِ ‏” ‏ ‏.‏

    It was
    narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “A
    grateful
    eater is equal to a patient fasting person.”

    Chapter: What was narrated concerning the virtues of fasting

    حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُصَفَّى، حَدَّثَنَا بَقِيَّةُ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ بُرَيْدَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ لِبِلاَلٍ ‏”‏ الْغَدَاءُ يَا بِلاَلُ ‏”‏ ‏.‏ فَقَالَ إِنِّي صَائِمٌ ‏.‏ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ ‏”‏ نَأْكُلُ أَرْزَاقَنَا وَفَضْلُ رِزْقِ بِلاَلٍ فِي الْجَنَّةِ أَشَعَرْتَ يَا بِلاَلُ أَنَّ الصَّائِمَ تُسَبِّحُ عِظَامُهُ وَتَسْتَغْفِرُ لَهُ الْمَلاَئِكَةُ مَا أُكِلَ عِنْدَهُ ‏”‏ ‏.‏

    It was
    narrated from Sulaiman bin Buraidah that his father said: “The
    Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to Bilal: ‘Come and eat, O Bilal.’
    He
    said: ‘I am fasting.’ The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘We
    are
    eating our provision, but most of Bilal’s provision is in
    Paradise. Do
    you realise, O Bilal, that the bones of the fasting
    person glorify
    Allah and the angels pray for forgiveness for him so
    long as food is
    eaten in front of him?’”

    حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الرَّقِّيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي حُرَّةَ، عَنْ عَمِّهِ، حَكِيمِ بْنِ أَبِي حُرَّةَ عَنْ سِنَانِ بْنِ سَنَّةَ الأَسْلَمِيِّ، صَاحِبِ النَّبِيِّ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ ‏ “‏ الطَّاعِمُ الشَّاكِرُ لَهُ مِثْلُ أَجْرِ الصَّائِمِ الصَّابِرِ ‏” ‏ ‏.‏

    It was
    narrated from Sinan bin Sannah Al-Aslami, the Companion of the
    Prophet (ﷺ), that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “A grateful
    eater will have a reward like that of a patient fasting person.”

    حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الصَّبَّاحِ، قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي الزِّنَادِ، عَنِ الأَعْرَجِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ قَالَ ‏ “‏ إِذَا دُعِيَ أَحَدُكُمْ إِلَى طَعَامٍ وَهُوَ صَائِمٌ فَلْيَقُلْ إِنِّي صَائِمٌ ‏” ‏ ‏.‏

    It was
    narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “If
    anyone
    of you is invited to eat when he is fasting, let him say: ‘I am
    fasting.’”

    حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ ابْنُ عُلَيَّةَ، عَنْ هِشَامٍ الدَّسْتَوَائِيِّ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ، قَالَ اعْتَكَفْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ الْعَشْرَ الأَوْسَطَ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ فَقَالَ ‏ “‏ إِنِّي أُرِيتُ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ فَأُنْسِيتُهَا فَالْتَمِسُوهَا فِي الْعَشْرِ الأَوَاخِرِ فِي الْوَتْرِ ‏” ‏ ‏.‏

    It was
    narrated that Abu Sa’eed Al-Khudri said: “We observed I’tikaf
    with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) during the middle ten days of
    Ramadan. He said: ‘I have been shown Lailatul-Qadr, then I was
    caused
    to forget it, so seek it in the last ten night, on the
    odd-numbered
    nights.’”

    حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ السُّلَمِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَاصِمٍ، أَنْبَأَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ، عَنْ أَبِي الزُّبَيْرِ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ ‏ “‏ مَنْ دُعِيَ إِلَى طَعَامٍ وَهُوَ صَائِمٌ فَلْيُجِبْ فَإِنْ شَاءَ طَعِمَ وَإِنْ شَاءَ تَرَكَ ‏” ‏ ‏.‏

    It was
    narrated from Jabir that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Whoever
    is invited to eat when he is fasting, let him accept the
    invitation;
    and if he wants to let him eat, and if he wants let him
    not eat.”

    Chapter: What was narrated concerning the virtues of fasting

    حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، عَنْ سَعْدَانَ الْجُهَنِيِّ، عَنْ سَعْدٍ أَبِي مُجَاهِدٍ الطَّائِيِّ، – وَكَانَ ثِقَةً – عَنْ أَبِي مُدِلَّةَ، – وَكَانَ ثِقَةً – عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ ‏ “‏ ثَلاَثَةٌ لاَ تُرَدُّ دَعْوَتُهُمُ الإِمَامُ الْعَادِلُ وَالصَّائِمُ حَتَّى يُفْطِرَ وَدَعْوَةُ الْمَظْلُومِ يَرْفَعُهَا اللَّهُ دُونَ الْغَمَامِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ وَتُفْتَحُ لَهَا أَبْوَابُ السَّمَاءِ وَيَقُولُ بِعِزَّتِي لأَنْصُرَنَّكِ وَلَوْ بَعْدَ حِينٍ ‏” ‏ ‏.‏

    It was
    narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)
    said: There are three whose supplications are not turned back: A just
    ruler, and a fasting person until he breaks his fast. And, the
    supplication of one who has been wronged is raised by Allah up to the
    clouds on the Day of Resurrection, and the gates of heaven are opened
    for it, and Allah says, ‘By My Might I will help you (against the
    wrongdoer) even if it is after a while.’”

    حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ عَمَّارٍ، حَدَّثَنَا الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ الْمَدَنِيُّ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ أَبِي مُلَيْكَةَ، يَقُولُ سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ، يَقُولُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ ‏ “‏ إِنَّ لِلصَّائِمِ عِنْدَ فِطْرِهِ لَدَعْوَةً مَا تُرَدُّ ‏” ‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ ابْنُ أَبِي مُلَيْكَةَ سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عَمْرٍو يَقُولُ إِذَا أَفْطَرَ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ بِرَحْمَتِكَ الَّتِي وَسِعَتْ كُلَّ شَىْءٍ أَنْ تَغْفِرَ لِي ‏.‏

    It was
    narrated from ‘Abdullah bin ‘Amr bin ‘As that the Messenger of
    Allah (ﷺ) said: “When the fasting person breaks his fast, his
    supplication is not turned back.” (One of the narrators) Ibn Abi Mulaikah said: “When he broke his fast, I heard ‘Abdullah bin
    ‘Amr say: ‘O Allah! I ask You by Your mercy, which encompasses all things, to forgive me.’”

    حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدَةَ، أَنْبَأَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا غَيْلاَنُ بْنُ جَرِيرٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَعْبَدٍ الزِّمَّانِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي قَتَادَةَ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ ‏ “‏ صِيَامُ يَوْمِ عَاشُورَاءَ إِنِّي أَحْتَسِبُ عَلَى اللَّهِ أَنْ يُكَفِّرَ السَّنَةَ الَّتِي قَبْلَهُ ‏” ‏ ‏.‏

    It was
    narrated from Abu Qatadah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)
    said: “Fasting the day of ‘Ashura’, I hope, will expiate for the sins
    of the previous year.”
