    Chapter: The quantity of water required for ablution and bathing from a state of sexual impurity

    حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الأَحْوَصِ، عَنْ سِمَاكِ بْنِ حَرْبٍ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ اغْتَسَلَ بَعْضُ أَزْوَاجِ النَّبِيِّ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ فِي جَفْنَةٍ فَجَاءَ النَّبِيُّ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ لِيَغْتَسِلَ أَوْ يَتَوَضَّأَ فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنِّي كُنْتُ جُنُبًا ‏.‏ فَقَالَ ‏ “‏ الْمَاءُ لاَ يُجْنِبُ ‏” ‏ ‏.‏

    It was narrated that Ibn ‘Abbas said: “One of the wives of the Prophet took a bath from a large vessel, then the Prophet came and had a bath or ablution, and she said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, I was sexually impure.’ He said: ‘Water does not become impure.’”

    Chapter: The quantity of water required for ablution and bathing from a state of sexual impurity

    حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ عَمَّارٍ، حَدَّثَنَا مَالِكُ بْنُ أَنَسٍ، حَدَّثَنِي صَفْوَانُ بْنُ سُلَيْمٍ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ سَلَمَةَ، – هُوَ مِنْ آلِ ابْنِ الأَزْرَقِ – أَنَّ الْمُغِيرَةَ بْنَ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ، – وَهُوَ مِنْ بَنِي عَبْدِ الدَّارِ – حَدَّثَهُ أَنَّهُ، سَمِعَ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ، يَقُولُ جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّا نَرْكَبُ الْبَحْرَ وَنَحْمِلُ مَعَنَا الْقَلِيلَ مِنَ الْمَاءِ فَإِنْ تَوَضَّأْنَا بِهِ عَطِشْنَا أَفَنَتَوَضَّأُ مِنْ مَاءِ الْبَحْرِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ ‏ “‏ هُوَ الطَّهُورُ مَاؤُهُ الْحِلُّ مَيْتَتُهُ ‏” ‏ ‏.‏

    It was narrated that Mughirah bin Abu Burdah, who was from the tribe of Banu ‘Abdud-Dar, said that: He heard Abu Hurairah say: “A man came to the Messenger of Allah and said: “O Messenger of Allah, we travel by sea and carry a small amount of water with us. If we use it for ablution, we will become thirsty. Can we perform ablution with seawater?’ The Messenger of Allah said: ‘Its water is a means of purification, ad its dead meat is permissible. (i.e. the fish found dead in the sea).’”

    حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ، عَنْ سِمَاكِ بْنِ حَرْبٍ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، أَنَّ امْرَأَةً، مِنْ أَزْوَاجِ النَّبِيِّ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ اغْتَسَلَتْ مِنْ جَنَابَةٍ فَتَوَضَّأَ أَوِ اغْتَسَلَ النَّبِيُّ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ مِنْ فَضْلِ وَضُوئِهَا ‏.‏

    It was narrated from Ibn ‘Abbas that: One of the wives of the Prophet took a bath to cleanse herself from sexual impurity, then the Prophet performed ablution and had a bath with the water left over from her ablution.”

    حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى، وَإِسْحَاقُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ، قَالُوا حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو دَاوُدَ، حَدَّثَنَا شَرِيكٌ، عَنْ سِمَاكٍ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، عَنْ مَيْمُونَةَ، زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ تَوَضَّأَ بِفَضْلِ غُسْلِهَا مِنَ الْجَنَابَةِ ‏.‏

    It was narrated from Ibn ‘Abbas, from Maimunah the wife of the Prophet, that : the Prophet performed ablution with the water left over after she had taken a bath to cleanse herself from sexual impurity.

    حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو دَاوُدَ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ عَاصِمٍ الأَحْوَلِ، عَنْ أَبِي حَاجِبٍ، عَنِ الْحَكَمِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ نَهَى أَنْ يَتَوَضَّأَ الرَّجُلُ بِفَضْلِ وَضُوءِ الْمَرْأَةِ ‏.‏

    It was narrated from Hakam bin ‘Amr that: The Messenger of Allah forbade men to perform ablution with the left over water by a woman.

    حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى، حَدَّثَنَا الْمُعَلَّى بْنُ أَسَدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ الْمُخْتَارِ، حَدَّثَنَا عَاصِمٌ الأَحْوَلُ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سَرْجِسَ، قَالَ نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ أَنْ يَغْتَسِلَ الرَّجُلُ بِفَضْلِ وَضُوءِ الْمَرْأَةِ وَالْمَرْأَةُ بِفَضْلِ الرَّجُلِ وَلَكِنْ يَشْرَعَانِ جَمِيعًا ‏. ‏ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنُ مَاجَهْ الصَّحِيحُ هُوَ الأَوَّلُ وَالثَّانِي وَهَمٌ ‏.‏

    قَالَ أَبُو الْحَسَنِ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو حَاتِمٍ، وَأَبُو عُثْمَانَ الْبُخَارِيُّ قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا الْمُعَلَّى بْنُ أَسَدٍ، نَحْوَهُ ‏.‏

    It was narrated that `Abdullah bin Sarjis said: “The Messenger of Allah forbade men to perform ablution with the water left over by a woman, and women to perform ablution with water left over by a man, however both (spouses) may start to perform their ablutions at the same time.”

    Abu `Abdullah Ibn Majah said: “The first (narration) is correct, and the second (narration) is Wahm (an error).”

    حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى، حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ، عَنْ إِسْرَائِيلَ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، عَنِ الْحَارِثِ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ، قَالَ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ وَأَهْلُهُ يَغْتَسِلُونَ مِنْ إِنَاءٍ وَاحِدٍ وَلاَ يَغْتَسِلُ أَحَدُهُمَا بِفَضْلِ صَاحِبِهِ ‏.‏

    It was narrated that ‘Ali said: “The Prophet and his wife would take a bath from one vessel, but neither of them would have a bath with the leftover water of the other.” (Daif)

    It was narrated that ‘Aishah said: “The Messenger of Allah and I would take a bath from a single vessel.”

    It was narrated from Ibn ‘Abbas that his maternal aunt Maimunah said: “The Messager of Allah and I used to take bath from a single vessel.”

    حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَدْرٍ، عَبَّادُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ حَدَّثَنَا مُطَهَّرُ بْنُ الْهَيْثَمِ، حَدَّثَنَا عَلْقَمَةُ بْنُ أَبِي جَمْرَةَ الضُّبَعِيُّ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ أَبِي جَمْرَةَ الضُّبَعِيِّ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ لاَ يَكِلُ طُهُورَهُ إِلَى أَحَدٍ وَلاَ صَدَقَتَهُ الَّتِي يَتَصَدَّقُ بِهَا يَكُونُ هُوَ الَّذِي يَتَوَلاَّهَا بِنَفْسِهِ ‏.‏

    It was narrated that Ibn ‘Abbas said: “The Messenger of Allah never entrusted his purification to anyone nor his charity that he had given to anyone; he would be the one to take care of these matters himself.”
