    Chapter: The quantity of water required for ablution and bathing from a state of sexual impurity

    حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي مَرْيَمَ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَيُّوبَ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ زَحْرٍ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ يَزِيدَ، عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ، عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ، ‏.‏ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ قَالَ ‏ “‏ لاَ يَعْجِزْ أَحَدُكُمْ إِذَا دَخَلَ مِرْفَقَهُ أَنْ يَقُولَ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الرِّجْسِ النَّجَسِ الْخَبِيثِ الْمُخْبِثِ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ ‏” ‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو الْحَسَنِ وَحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو حَاتِمٍ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي مَرْيَمَ، فَذَكَرَ نَحْوَهُ وَلَمْ يَقُلْ فِي حَدِيثِهِ مِنَ الرِّجْسِ النَّجَسِ إِنَّمَا قَالَ مِنَ الْخَبِيثِ الْمُخْبِثِ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ ‏.‏

    It was narrated from Abu Umamah that: The Messenger of Allah said: “None of you should fail to say, when he enters his toilet: ‘Allahumma inni a`udhu bika minar-rijsin-najis, al-khabithil-mukhbith, ash-Shaitanir-rajim (O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the filthy and impure, the evil one with evil companions, the accursed Shaitan).’” (Da’if)

    Another chain with a slightly different wording from Ibn Abi Maryam who mentioned similar, but he did not say in his narration: “Minar-rijsin-najis (From the filthy and the impure)” he only said: “Minal-khabithil-mukhbith, ash-Shaitanir-rajim (From the evil one with evil companions, the accursed Shaitan).”

    حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَبِي بُكَيْرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْرَائِيلُ، حَدَّثَنَا يُوسُفُ بْنُ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ، سَمِعْتُ أَبِي يَقُولُ، دَخَلْتُ عَلَى عَائِشَةَ فَسَمِعْتُهَا تَقُولُ، كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ إِذَا خَرَجَ مِنَ الْغَائِطِ قَالَ ‏ “‏ غُفْرَانَكَ ‏” ‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو الْحَسَنِ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو حَاتِمٍ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو غَسَّانَ النَّهْدِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْرَائِيلُ، نَحْوَهُ ‏.‏

    Yusuf bin Abi Burdah narrated: “I heard my father say: ‘I entered upon ‘Aishah, and I heard her say: “When the Messenger of Allah exited the toilet, he would say: Ghufranaka (I seek Your forgiveness).’” (Sahih)

    حَدَّثَنَا هَارُونُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ الْمُحَارِبِيُّ، عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ، وَقَتَادَةَ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ، قَالَ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ إِذَا خَرَجَ مِنَ الْخَلاَءِ قَالَ ‏ “‏ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَذْهَبَ عَنِّي الأَذَى وَعَافَانِي ‏” ‏ ‏.‏

    It was narrated that Anas bin Malik said: “Whenever the Prophet exited the toilet, he would say: ‘Al-hamdu lillahilladhi adhhaba ‘annial-adha wa ‘afani (Praise is to Allah Who has relieved me of impurity and given me good health).’”

    حَدَّثَنَا سُوَيْدُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ زَكَرِيَّا بْنِ أَبِي زَائِدَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ خَالِدِ بْنِ سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْبَهِيِّ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ كَانَ يَذْكُرُ اللَّهَ عَلَى كُلِّ أَحْيَانِهِ ‏.‏

    ‘Urwah narrated from ‘Aishah that: The Messenger of Allah used to remember Allah in all circumstances.

    حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ، وَعَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ نُمَيْرٍ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْمَقْبُرِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ ‏ “‏ لَوْلاَ أَنْ أَشُقَّ عَلَى أُمَّتِي لأَمَرْتُهُمْ بِالسِّوَاكِ عِنْدَ كُلِّ صَلاَةٍ ‏” ‏ ‏.‏

    It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said: “The Messenger of Allah said: ‘Were it not that it would be too difficult for my Ummah (nation), I would have commanded them to use the tooth stick at every time of prayer.’”

    حَدَّثَنَا نَصْرُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ الْجَهْضَمِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ الْحَنَفِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا هَمَّامُ بْنُ يَحْيَى، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ كَانَ إِذَا دَخَلَ الْخَلاَءَ وَضَعَ خَاتَمَهُ ‏.‏

    It was narrated from Anas bin Malik that: When the Prophet entered the toilet, he would take off his ring.

    حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ وَكِيعٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَثَّامُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ حَبِيبِ بْنِ أَبِي ثَابِتٍ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ يُصَلِّي بِاللَّيْلِ رَكْعَتَيْنِ رَكْعَتَيْنِ ثُمَّ يَنْصَرِفُ فَيَسْتَاكُ ‏.‏

    It was narrated that Ibn ‘Abbas said: “The Messenger of Allah used to pray in the night (Qiyamul-Lail) two Rak’ah by two, then when he finished he would use the tooth stick.”

    حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، أَنْبَأَنَا مَعْمَرٌ، عَنْ أَشْعَثَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ ‏ “‏ لاَ يَبُولَنَّ أَحَدُكُمْ فِي مُسْتَحَمِّهِ فَإِنَّ عَامَّةَ الْوَسْوَاسِ مِنْهُ ‏” ‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنُ مَاجَهْ سَمِعْتُ عَلِيَّ بْنَ مُحَمَّدٍ الطَّنَافِسِيَّ يَقُولُ إِنَّمَا هَذَا فِي الْحَفِيرَةِ فَأَمَّا الْيَوْمَ فَلاَ ‏.‏ فَمُغْتَسَلاَتُهُمُ الْجَصُّ وَالصَّارُوجُ وَالْقِيرُ فَإِذَا بَالَ فَأَرْسَلَ عَلَيْهِ الْمَاءَ لاَ بَأْسَ بِهِ ‏.‏

    It was narrated that ‘Abdullah bin Mughaffal said: “The Messenger of Allah said: ‘None of you should urinate in his wash area for most of the insinuating thoughts come from that.’” (Da’if)

    Abu ‘Abdullah bin Majah said: (“Abul-Hasan said: ‘I heard Muhammed bin Yazid saying:) ”Ali bin Muhammed At-Tanafisi said: ‘This (prohibition) applies to cases where the ground (in the place used for washing) was soft. But nowadays this does not apply, because the baths you use now are built of plaster, Saruj and tar; so if a person urinates there then pours water over it, that clears it away, and that is fine.’”

    حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ عَمَّارٍ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ شُعَيْبٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي الْعَاتِكَةِ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ يَزِيدَ، عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ، عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ قَالَ ‏ “‏ تَسَوَّكُوا فَإِنَّ السِّوَاكَ مَطْهَرَةٌ لِلْفَمِ مَرْضَاةٌ لِلرَّبِّ وَمَا جَاءَنِي جِبْرِيلُ إِلاَّ أَوْصَانِي بِالسِّوَاكِ حَتَّى لَقَدْ خَشِيتُ أَنْ يُفْرَضَ عَلَىَّ وَعَلَى أُمَّتِي وَلَوْلاَ أَنِّي أَخَافُ أَنْ أَشُقَّ عَلَى أُمَّتِي لَفَرَضْتُهُ لَهُمْ وَإِنِّي لأَسْتَاكُ حَتَّى لَقَدْ خَشِيتُ أَنْ أُحْفِيَ مَقَادِمَ فَمِي ‏” ‏ ‏.‏

    It was narrated from Abu Umamah that: The Messenger of Allah said: “Use the tooth stick, for the tooth stick purifies the mouth and is pleasing to the Lord. Jibril never came to me but he advised me to use the tooth stick, until I feared that it would be made obligatory for me and my Ummah. Were it not that I fear that it would be too difficult for my Ummah, I would have enjoined it upon them. And I use the tooth stick until I fear that I may make the front of my mouth sore.’ (i.e. my gums) (or cause my teeth to fall out due to brushing them so often).”

    حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا شَرِيكٌ، وَهُشَيْمٌ، وَوَكِيعٌ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ، عَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ أَتَى سُبَاطَةَ قَوْمٍ فَبَالَ عَلَيْهَا قَائِمًا ‏.‏

    It was narrated from Hudhaifah that: The Messenger of Allah came to the garbage dump of some people and he urinated on it standing up.
