    وَعَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ قَالَ: لَقِيتُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ قُلْتُ: أَخْبِرْنِي عَنْ صِفَةُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي التَّوْرَاةِ قَالَ: أَجَلْ وَاللَّهِ إِنَّهُ لموصوف بِبَعْض صفتِه فِي القرآنِ: (يَا أيُّها النبيُّ إِنَّا أرسلناكَ شَاهدا ومُبشِّراً وَنَذِيرا) وحِرْزا للاُمِّيّينَ أَنْت بعدِي وَرَسُولِي سَمَّيْتُكَ الْمُتَوَكِّلَ لَيْسَ بِفَظٍّ وَلَا غَلِيظٍ وَلَا سَخَّابٍ فِي الْأَسْوَاقِ وَلَا يَدْفَعُ بِالسَّيِّئَةِ السَّيِّئَةَ وَلَكِنْ يَعْفُو وَيَغْفِرُ وَلَنْ يَقْبِضَهُ اللَّهُ حَتَّى يُقِيمَ بِهِ الْمِلَّةَ الْعَوْجَاءَ بِأَنْ يَقُولُوا: لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَيَفْتَحُ بِهَا أَعْيُنًا عُمْيًا وَآذَانًا صُمًّا وَقُلُوبًا غُلْفًا. رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ وَكَذَا الدَّارِمِيُّ عَنْ عَطَاءٍ عَنِ ابْنِ سَلَامٍ نَحْوَهُ

    `Ata’ b. Yasar told that he met `Abdallah b. `Amr b. al- `As and asked him to inform him of the description of God’s messenger given in the Torah. He agreed, swearing by God that he was certainly described in the Torah by part of the description of him given in the Qur’an when it says, “0 prophet, We have sent you as a witness, a bearer of good tidings, and a warner[1], and a guard for the common people. You are my servant and my messenger; I have, called you the one who trusts, not harsh or rough, nor loud-voiced in the streets. He will not repulse evil with evil, but will- pardon and forgive, and God will not take him till He uses him to straighten the crooked creed so that people may say there is no god but God, and opens thereby blind eyes, deaf ears and hardened hearts[2].” Quran; 33:45. Reminiscent of Isaiah 42; 1-4. Bukhari transmitted it, and Darimi also gives something to the same effect on the authority of `Ata who gave as his authority Ibn Salam.

    عَن خبَّابِ بنِ الأرتِّ قَالَ: صَلَّى بِنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ صَلَاةَ فَأَطَالَهَا. قَالُوا: يَا رَسُولَ الله صلَّيتَ صَلَاةً لَمْ تَكُنْ تُصَلِّيهَا قَالَ: «أَجَلْ إِنَّهَا صَلَاةُ رَغْبَةٍ وَرَهْبَةٍ وَإِنِّي سَأَلْتُ اللَّهَ فِيهَا ثَلَاثًا فَأَعْطَانِي اثْنَتَيْنِ وَمَنَعَنِي وَاحِدَةً سَأَلْتُهُ أَنْ لَا يُهْلِكَ أُمَّتِي بِسَنَةٍ فَأَعْطَانِيهَا وَسَأَلْتُهُ أَنْ لَا يُسَلِّطَ عَلَيْهِمْ عَدُوًّا مِنْ غَيْرِهِمْ فَأَعْطَانِيهَا وَسَأَلْتُهُ أَنْ لَا يُذِيقَ بَعْضَهُمْ بَأْسَ بَعْضٍ فمنعَنيها» . رَوَاهُ التِّرْمِذِيّ وَالنَّسَائِيّ

    Khabbab b. al-Aratt said: God’s messenger led us in prayer and prolonged it, and when the people said, “Messenger of God, you have prayed a prayer such as you have not been accustomed to pray,” he replied, “Yes, it was a prayer of hope and fear during which I asked God for three things, two of which He granted me but one of which He refused me. I asked Him not to destroy my people by famine and He granted me that, I asked Him not to let an enemy from another people rule over them and He granted me that, and I asked Him not to let them experience one another’s violence but He refused me that.” Tirmidhi and Nasa’i transmitted it.

    وَعَنْ أَبِي مَالِكٍ الْأَشْعَرِيِّ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ” إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ أَجَارَكُمْ مِنْ ثَلَاثِ خِلَالٍ: أَنْ لَا يَدْعُوَ عَلَيْكُمْ نَبِيُّكُمْ فَتَهْلَكُوا جَمِيعًا وَأَنْ لَا يُظْهِرَ أَهْلَ الْبَاطِلِ على أهلِ الحقِّ وَأَن لَا تجتمِعوا على ضَلَالَة ” . رَوَاهُ أَبُو دَاوُد

    Abu Malik al-Ash’ari reported God’s messenger as saying, “God who is great and glorious has protected you from three things: that your prophet should not invoke a curse on you and you should all perish, that those who follow what is false should not prevail over those who follow the truth, and that you should not all join in an error.” Abu Dawud transmitted it.

    عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «بُعِثْتُ مِنْ خَيْرِ قُرُونِ بَنِي آدَمَ قَرْنًا فَقَرْنًا حَتَّى كُنْتُ من القرنِ الَّذِي كنتُ مِنْهُ» . رَوَاهُ البُخَارِيّ

    Abu Huraira reported God’s messenger as saying, “I have been commissioned from among the best of the generations of Adam’s descendants, generation after generation, till I came into being in the generation in which I have come.” Bukhari transmitted it.

    وَعَنْ عَوْفِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ” لَنْ يَجْمَعَ اللَّهُ عَلَى هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ سَيْفَيْنِ: سَيْفًا مِنْهَا وسَيفاً منْ عدُوِّها ” رَوَاهُ أَبُو دَاوُد

    ‘Auf b. Malik reported God’s messenger as saying, “God will not cause two swords to smite this people together, one from among itself and one from its enemy.” Abu Dawud transmitted it.

    وَعَنْ وَاثِلَةَ بْنِ الْأَسْقَعِ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: «إِنَّ اللَّهَ اصْطَفَى كِنَانَةَ مِنْ وَلَدِ إِسْمَاعِيلَ وَاصْطَفَى قُرَيْشًا مِنْ كِنَانَةَ وَاصْطَفَى مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ بَنَى هَاشِمٍ وَاصْطَفَانِي مِنْ بَنِي هَاشِمٍ» . رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ وَفِي رِوَايَةٍ لِلتِّرْمِذِيِّ: «إِنَّ اللَّهَ اصْطَفَى مِنْ ولد إِبْرَاهِيم إِسْمَاعِيل وَاصْطفى من ولد إِسْمَاعِيل بني كنَانَة»

    Wathila b. al-Asqa’ told that he heard God’s messenger say, “God chose Kinana from the descendants of Ishmael, He chose Quraish from Kinana, from Quraish He chose the B. Hashim, and He chose me from the B. Hashim.” Muslim transmitted it. In a version by Tirmidhi he said, “God chose Ishmael from among the children of Abraham, and He chose the B. Kinana from among the descendants of Ishmael.’ Tirmidhi

    وَعَن الْعَبَّاس أَنَّهُ جَاءَ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَكَأَنَّهُ سَمِعَ شَيْئًا فَقَامَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ فَقَالَ: «مَنْ أَنَا؟» فَقَالُوا: أَنْتَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ. فَقَالَ: «أَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ إِنَّ اللَّهَ خَلَقَ الْخَلْقَ فَجَعَلَنِي فِي خَيْرِهِمْ ثمَّ جعلهم فرقتَيْن فجعلني فِي خير فِرْقَةً ثُمَّ جَعَلَهُمْ قَبَائِلَ فَجَعَلَنِي فِي خَيْرِهِمْ قَبيلَة ثمَّ جعله بُيُوتًا فَجَعَلَنِي فِي خَيْرِهِمْ بَيْتًا فَأَنَا خَيْرُهُمْ نفسا وَخَيرهمْ بَيْتا» . رَوَاهُ التِّرْمِذِيّ

    Al ‘Abbas told that he came to the Prophet who seemed to have heard something and so mounted the pulpit and asked, “Who am I?” On being told that he was God’s messenger he said, “I am Muhammad son of `Abdallah son of Abd al-Muttalib. God created all creatures and placed me among the best of them, then put them in two sections[*] and placed me in the better section, then made them into tribes and placed me in the best tribe, then made them into families and placed me in the best family, and I am inherently the best of them and come of the best family.” * Mirqat ; 5:366, explains this as meaning Arabs and foreigners, with which may be compared the contrast between Jews and Gentiles, or Greeks and barbarians. Tirmidhi transmitted it.

    وَعَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: أَنَا سَيِّدُ وَلَدِ آدَمَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ وَأَوَّلُ مَنْ يَنْشَقُّ عَنْهُ الْقَبْرُ وَأَوَّلُ شَافِعٍ وَأَوَّلُ مُشَفَّعٍ “. رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ

    Abu Huraira reported God’s messenger as saying, “I shall be preeminent among the descendants of Adam on the day of resurrection, the first from whom the grave will be cleft open, the first intercessor and the first whose intercession will be accepted.” Muslim transmitted it.

    وَعَن أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ: قَالُوا: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَتَى وَجَبَتْ لَكَ النُّبُوَّةُ؟ قَالَ: «وَآدَمُ بَيْنَ الرُّوحِ وَالْجَسَدِ» . رَوَاهُ التِّرْمِذِيّ

    Abu Huraira told that when God’s messenger was asked when the office of prophet had been established for him, he replied, “When Adam had not yet had his spirit joined to his body.” Tirmidhi transmitted it.

    عَن أبي رزين قَالَ: قلت: يَا رَسُول الله أَيْن رَبُّنَا قَبْلَ أَنْ يَخْلُقَ خَلْقَهُ؟ قَالَ: «كَانَ فِي عَمَاءٍ مَا تَحْتَهُ هَوَاءٌ وَمَا فَوْقَهُ هَوَاءٌ وَخَلَقَ عَرْشَهُ عَلَى الْمَاءِ» . رَوَاهُ التِّرْمِذِيُّ وَقَالَ: قَالَ يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ: الْعَمَاءُ: أَيْ لَيْسَ مَعَه شَيْء

    Abu Razin told that he asked God’s messenger, “Where was our Lord before He created the creation?” to which he replied, “He was in obscurity ( ‘ama’ ) with no air below Him and no air above Him, and He created His Throne on the water.” Tirmidhi transmitted it. Yazid b. Harun[1] said `ama’ means that there was nothing with Him[2]. Al-Wasiti (d.206), a highly estimated authority who appears in the course of the isnad . The word ‘ama’ presents difficulty. It commonly means `clouds’, but this is felt to be inappropriate here unless figuratively in the sense of God being veiled. It is suggested that this means it is a matter which the mind cannot grasp.
