What is the ruling on using the hide of a dead animal in Islamic law?

Once Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) passed by a dead sheep and said (to the people), “Why don’t you use its hide?”
They said, “But it is dead,” He said, “Only eating it, is prohibited.”
They said, “But it is dead,” He said, “Only eating it, is prohibited.”
